Lot Essay

The same model posed for the central pall-bearer in Southall's painting The Mystic Burial, also dated 1895, which was included in the Southall Exhibition seen at the Birmingham City Art Gallery and the Fine Art Society, London, in 1980, no. A9 (repr.). The other two pall-bearers in the picture were modelled by Anna Elizabeth Baker, the artist's cousin and future wife, and no doubt the sitter in our drawing was also a member of his circle. It is interesting that, although she faces to the left in the painting, in both painting and drawing she is seen full-face with her head thrown back, a pose which Southall must have found attractive. The silverpoint technique of the drawing accords well with the style of the painting, both betraying Southall's ardent response to early Italian art
