The Sulphur Stream

signed Chas. Burchfield, and dated 1917, l.r.--inscribed with title and: Water from a coal mine carries with it a sediment (probably of iron origin rather than the common local term, sulphur) which varied from rich yellow to purest orange. The "sulphur" streams were common, and always imparted to the landscape through which they ran, a strange fantastic character and dated May 1917 on the reverse--watercolor, gouache, crayon and pencil on paper laid down on board
