Of ovi-form with continuous shallow relief bands depicting scenes from classical mythology beneath a waisted neck flanked by curved handles ending in ram's heads, on a circular anthemion-cast base, stamped '1874 Paris Tiffany', all raised on a mahogany circular fluted pedestal with leaf-cast capital beneath a griotte marble top, on a vitruvian scroll base, with bronze shield-form presentation plaque inscribed 'to David Drake Smith' --the urn 44¾in. (113.5cm.) high; the pedestal 36in. (91.4cm.) high

Ferdinand Levillain (1837-1905), was an award-winning sculptor of the mid to late 19th Century. He exhibited at the Salon from 1861 and won a silver medal at the Exposition universelle of 1889, later being awarded the Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Examples of his vases can be found in the Paris Museum of Modern Art and the Lyons Museum.
