A FRIEZE FRAGMENT

From the Décor Pastoral printed by Desfossé et Karth circa 1851-1864, depicting cattle in a riverscape with a hound chasing geese mounted by a beaded foliate border (edges frayed, ends frayed)-approximately 1ft. 1 1/2in. x 2ft. 7in. (34cm. x 79cm.), together with an intermediary panel, in the Charles\KX\k taste, depicting a scrolling foliate medallion with arabesques enclosing a squirrel perched on a branch amidst fruit and flowers flanked by lozenges enclosing polychrome butterflies on a grey ground, the reverse stamped twice 'CH Follot' (edges frayed, ends frayed)-approximately 7ft. 11in. x 1ft. 10in. (2m. 41cm. x 56cm.), a side wall in the Louis-Philippe taste, depicting ribbon-tied foliate oval medallions enclosing watery gardenscapes all en grissaille against aqua picked out in gold, the ground with birds and butterflies, the reverse with indistinct stencilled label (edges frayed, ends torn)-approximately 7ft. 7in. x 2ft. 3in. (2m. 31cm. x 68.5cm.) (3)

Lot Essay

An identical frieze panel is in the Collection of the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, and a related panel depicting grazing cattle in a landscape is illustrated in M. Guibert, Papier Peints 1800-1875, 1980, p.137, fig. 929 as circa 1850-1860.
