From the Manufacture Dufour designed by Mader Père circa 1812, three depicting a fruit and flower-filled basket hung with ribbon-tied floral garlands, one with a lyre within laurel swags and a musical trophy within scrolling foliate arabesques enclosing amorini, musical trophies and a classical vessel, one panel inscribed at the back 'Imprimé 1812, Dufour, Dessin Mader Père' (edges frayed, ends torn, losses)-three approximately 1ft. 10 1/2in. x 8ft. (57cm. x 2m. 44cm.), the fourth approximately 1ft. 10 1/2in. x 6ft. (57cm. x 1m. 83cm.) (4)

Lot Essay

Two identical panels by Mader Père are illustrated in O. Nouvel, Papier Peint Français 1800-1850, 1981, p. 113, figs. 497-498. The same motif appears in scenes from Molière's L'Avare as circa 1825 (see F. Teynac et. al., Wallpapers, A History, 1981, pp. 71, 117 illustrated). And an identical panel is illustrated in M. Guibert, Papiers Peints 1800-187, 1980, p. 89, fig. 585 as circa 1812.
