Lot Essay

Balfour-Browne specialised in the painting of stalking subjects. He lived mainly in Dumfriesshire and was an active deer-stalker for many years. There is a tale, possibly apocryphal, that he and his contemporary Archibald Thorburn made an agreement that Browne would not paint birds if Thorburn agreed not to paint deer
