The legend reads: "Fire has with many of the Indian tribes been an important feature of all of their ceremonials. To them it came as a gift from the gods. In the southwest region, where the Indians lived, the villages of some of the tribes have fire shrines, or altars, in secret places in high mountains. At these shrines occur many of their important rites."
