Lot Essay

Max Dupain was Australia's premiere photographer for sixty years. He published several books on photography and was well known for his architectural photographs. The Sydney Morning Herald obituary states: For the most part Dupain's subject matter was quintessentially Australian. He gloried in beaches and Sydney Harbor. His surfside photographs broke new aesthetic territory. Indeed his Sunbaker of 1937 can be reckoned among the most memorable sun-and-sand photographs ever taken. Dupain left Australia only twice, to photograph Australia's embassies in Paris and Bangkok.
