Lot Essay

Maron, a portrait painter and Meng's most important pupil, worked exclusively in Rome. There can be doubt that Maron knew Angelica Kauffmann as she came to Rome in 1763 and again in 1782. In 1788 she painted her self-portrait (Uffizi, Florence), and the above lot may have been executed around the same time as she appears about the same age. Another portrait by Maron of a Lady shown half length in a similar pose is in the Kunsthistorische Museum, Vienna.
