Lot Essay

The present composition is based on a painting by Jordaens, presently known only from a copy in the Staatliche Museen, Kassel. Paintings by Jordaens of the same subject but with somewhat varied compositions are in the Musée du Louvre, datable to circa 1630-35, and The Hermitage, St. Peterburg, which houses a modello for the lost original
