St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata. LARGE HISTORIATED INITIAL "F" (?) CUT FROM AN ANTIPHONAL ON VELLUM. [Tuscany, ca. 1300].

120 x 115 mm. (4 3/4 x 4 1/2 in.), cut approximately square through portions of the initial in pink, blue and orange with white tracery. Within, on a burnished gold ground, Francis kneeling between an orange church, open to the altar, and a mountain, enclosing a cave with a rabbit, above him a seraphim with pairs of orange, pink and blue wings. On verso, small portions of two lines of text and music, with square neumes on 4-line red staves. Some abrasion of pigment, flaking of gold. Matted and framed.
