BRADFORD, John (1510?-1555). Godlie meditations upon the Lordes prayer, the beleefe, and ten commaundementes, with other comfortable meditations, praters and exercises ... by the constant martyr of God John Bradford in the tyme of his imprisonment. London: Rowland Hall, 1562.
Small 8° (137 x 87mm). Collation: A8+1 [with additional leaf 'To the Reader' after the title] B-P8 Q6, with final errata leaf, printed slip pasted on I3 regarding the lack of a meditation on the tenth commandement. (Inner margin and small hole of title repaired with loss of one letter; some staining, mostly minor, particularly in quire A; a few early underlinings in ink.) Contemporary brown calf, tooled in gold, with blocked arabesque centre piece and initials "M.R." on upper and lower cover, spine in 5 compartments (head and foot of spine skilfully repaired; later label and endpapers; ties lacking). Provenance: in a 19th century note on the endpaper, M.R., the initials on the binding, are identified as possibly having belonged to Mary Roydon, described by Bradford in a letter as "my good sister in the Lord", cf. Bradford Works, Parker Society II p.67; Cardiff Castle bookplate.
FIRST EDITION. Written while Bradford was imprisoned in the Tower for seditious preaching and awaiting execution. STC 3484 (records only 4 copies, including the present).
