(12 15/16 x 9 7/16 x 1 3/16in.), A JEWELLED BINDING WITH 275 JEWELS ON AN ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT, dark blue levant morocco, rounded bevelled edges, covers with gilt fillet border, upper cover with a broad panel border framed with inlaid maroon morocco gilt ropework, curled at the top, bottom, sides and corners, the border filled with an elaborate design of fishes, weeds, crossed anchors and large shell corner ornaments in inlaid maroon, brown, two shades of green and light blue-gray morocco against stippled gold leaf, SET WITH 24 OPALS, 12 TURQUOISES, 10 GARNETS, 36 MOTHER-OF-PEARL PANELS AND 4 LAPIS LAZULI, framing a large recessed panel with a border of inlaid black, purple, green and light blue morocco, gilt stippled and SET WITH 28 MOONSTONES, 16 MOTHER-OF-PEARL PANELS, 12 GARNETS AND 8 TURQUOISES, framing a pictorial center ornament of a ship at sea against the sun with albatross above, gilt tooled and inlaid in blue, green, two shades of brown, gray and white morocco, the wave crests with white edges; lower cover with a broad panel border framed with inlaid mauve morocco strapwork shaped in compartments and filled with an elaborate design of fishes, shells, seaweed, squid side ornaments and paired seahorse corner ornaments with conches, all in inlaid green, two shades of brown, light blue and white morocco with intricate gilt tooling, SET WITH 12 MOTHER-OF-PEARL INSETS, framing a large recessed panel with a border of inlaid red morocco strapwork, a broad panel border of purple morocco, gilt tooled and onlaid with green morocco, heightened with stippled gold leaf, around an oval medallion of red and green morocco strip enclosing a blue morocco panel semé with gilt dots and set with an ornament of the albatross against a crossbow with two quarrels in inlaid white and brown morocco gilt, the recessed panel SET WITH 16 GREEN CHALCEDONIES, 12 AMETHYSTS, 16 MOONSTONES AND A RUBY EYE; spine in six compartments with five raised bands, gilt lettered in two compartments, a green and maroon morocco strapwork panel with blue-gray shell on a gilt stippled ground in the rest; board edges with gilt fillet broken by gilt lozenge, broad turn-ins with dense gilt dots and leaf tools and 20 repeated circular inlaid green morocco medallions onlaid with brown and black morocco fish, gilt shell corner ornaments, all exposing the blue morocco as a strapwork decoration; doublures of dark green morocco, gilt tooled with a border of continuous drawer handle tools with dice corner ornaments, and a semé of crescents, stars and birds; the upper doublure with a central recessed arabesque panel framed in narrow dark brown and purple morocco strip, with an inner border of brown and purple onlaid leaves and flowers, SET WITH 8 GARNETS, 4 TOPAZES AND 8 BLUE CHALCEDONIES AROUND AN OVAL PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE (60 x 46mm. 2 3/8 x 1 13/16in.), in gilt metal frame and blue, red and brown morocco onlaid border; the lower doublure with a different arabesque centerpiece comprising an onlaid blue and black morocco border and stipple gold leaf depicting fish ornaments, around a central gilt lyre framed by a circular border of onlaid blue morocco and brown strip, gilt tooled, the panel SET WITH 24 BLUE AND 24 GREEN CHALCEDONIES; free endpages of matching dark green morocco with gilt fillet and onlaid brown morocco strapwork outer border, enclosing a broad inner border with elaborate gilt line tooling, shell and anchor ornaments and small onlays of light blue, red and purple morocco, the large center panel with an allover pattern of connected curved lines, bird in flight and tiny white morocco onlays, a central arabesque of brown morocco with light blue and green inlays framing a black and blue onlaid medallion, the upper doublure bearing the STC cipher and the lower doublure a gilt sunburst; dark green silk fly-pages, g.e., stamp-signed on upper doublure: "Illuminated and Bound by Sangorski & Sutcliffe London" and with their gilt cipher above, blue morocco velvet lined box with hinged lids and remains of snap fasteners.

ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, 30 leaves (54 numbered pages and colophon page) plus 4 blank vellum flyleaves at front and 3 at back, written in a fine upright wide and open roman script in black with verse opening letters mostly in blue, some in red or green and other line opening letters in red, marginal glosses in red, half-title and title-page lettered in blue and burnished gold, 4 full-page minatures with gilt and colored borders and 3 smaller miniatures, 12 pages with full or smaller ornate borders of stylized leaves, flowers, fishes, shells and other ornaments, heightened with burnished gold, almost every page with an opening capital initial in gold or colors, decorated with tracery and incorporating colored scrollwork descenders or partial borders on 6 pages, many page openings in fine capitals of gold or decorated colors. Colophon statement: "This copy of 'The Rime of The Ancient Mariner' by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, has been written out on vellum, illuminated and bound by Messrs Sangorski & Sutcliffe of No. 1-5 Poland Street in the County of London and will not be duplicated."
