DORÉ, GUSTAVE. Two original wood-engraved blocks for Doré's illustrations to William Blanchard Jerrold's London, a pilgrimage (London, 1872), of the plates "Greenwich in the season", p. ii, 257 x 187 x 20mm. (10 1/8 x 7 3/8 x 3/4in.), signed by Doré and the engraver Jomard, and "Found in the Street", p. 184, 259 x 199 x 22mm. (10 1/4 x 7 7/8 x 1 13/16in.), signed by A. Doms and Doré, the engraved surfaces of both measuring 235 x 187mm. (9 1/4 x 7 3/8in.), each composed of three blocks tightly clamped together, with wooden pieces at top and bottom (one lacking the top piece) and the original screws, the Greenwich block unglued along the lower joint and with a diagonal crack in the upper right corner, a few scratches to the engraved surfaces, housed in a quarter morocco suede-lined folding case by Sangorski & Sutcliffe/Zaehnsdorf, the first block depicting a wealthy party crowding the terraces of a mansion overlooking the Thames on a starry night and the second a dimly lit room in a crowded tenement. Ray English, 207 ("Doré's devasting realization of the contrast of wealth and poverty in a modern metropolis makes London one of the great illustrated books of the world.")
