BUNYAN, John (1628-1688). The Barren Fig-tree: or, The Doom & Downfal [sic] of the Fruitless Professor. London: for J. Robinson, 1688.

2 parts in one volume, 12° (142 x 78mm). Collation: A-H12. Title within black border. (Lacking H11-12, 4pp. printer's advertisements; repair to D5 affecting some letters, and to tip of lower outer corner of E2, not affecting text; one letter of title obliterated by printing fault.) 19th-century blue morocco gilt, edges gilt, by W. Pratt (front joint slightly rubbed). Provenance: Cardiff Castle bookplate.

A fine copy of the second edition of one of the rarest of Bunyan's works: of the first edition, only two copies are recorded in Wing. The essay, Exhortation to Peace and Unity, is not included in Doe's catalogue of Bunyan's works, of 1692, and is therefore described by Harrison as a supposititious work only, but as it is mentioned on the title page of the Barren Fig-tree and clearly forms part of the same book, it may be for this reason that Doe omitted to itemise it separately. Wing B-5485 (8 copies); Harrison 17.
