DODGSON, Rev. CHARLES LUTWIDGE ("Lewis Carroll"). Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. London: Macmillan 1872 [actually December 1871]. 8vo, original red cloth gilt, g.e., recased with ends of spine repaired, wear, rear cover a bit stained, binder's ticket of Burn & Co. at inside rear cover, red half morocco slipcase. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE with the misprint "wade" for "wabe" in the second line of "Jabberwocky" on p. 21, foliation present on pp. 95 and 98 (no priority known), 50 illustrations by John Tenniel, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by Dodgson in his usual purple ink on the half-title: "Lucy Walters, from the Author, Christmas 1871." The recipient (b. 1856?) was the daughter of Henry Walters, a graduate of Christ Church, Oxford. The Walters family (including five children) were Guildford friends of Dodgson's of some years' standing: "Dodgson frequently called on the Walters family when he was in Guildford and once offered Mrs. Walters the use of his Eastbourne lodgings"--Letters, ed.
