STEVENSON, ROBERT LOUIS. St. Ives. Being the Adventures of a French Prisoner in England. London: Heineman 1898. 8vo, original black cloth, a little rubbed, red half morocco slipcase. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, embossed stamp "Presentation Copy" on title-page, 32 pages of publisher's ads at rear. Beinecke 655. St. Ives was left unfinished at Stevenson's death. The last six chapters (of the book's 36) were written by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch from an outline of the intended course of the novel supplied by Mrs. Isobel Strong, who had acted as her step-father's [RLS's] amanuensis.

Autograph manuscript, two leaves of St. Ives, [n.p., n.d.], 1 1/4pages, 4to, written in ink on the rectos with extensive holograph revisions, the leaves hinged together, small marginal burn hole in first leaf, in a slipcase with the above book. The two leaves are from Chapter XII of the novel. The first page (foliated "88") contains about 550 words and is an early draft, beginning at page 86, line 27, and ending on page 87, line 28, of the printed book; the second page contains about 60 words, apparently intended for use in the same chapter, but not included in the final text.
