GETTING EDMUND GOSSE TO REVIEW HIS NOVEL "PRINCE OTTO"

"I am shortly bringing out a novel (Prince Otto: Chatto & Windus) [published 1895] with which I have taken some pains, and of which I am very anxious to get a frank opinion. Now you have a man on your staff [Stevenson's friend, the critic Edmund Goose], who is (in his lucid intervals) an admirable and interesting critic. I think he will hate my book; he hated the only other one of mine he ever handled; but I somehow would rather be cursed by Mr. Purcel [Stevenson's joke name for Gosse] than blessed by another. Can you, without a word of course of this communication, place Otto in his hands?..."
