BUNYAN, John (1628-1688). A Discourse upon the Pharisee and the Publicane. London: for John Harris, 1685.

12° (137 x 75mm). Collation: A4 B-I12 K6. Title, foreword, engraved frontispiece of the Pharisee and the publican, portrait of Bunyan below. (Lacking first and last blanks; frontispiece shaved at outer and lower margins and repaired; title strengthened at outer margin; first quire and B1 strengthened at inner margin; B5-6 shaved at outer margin with slight loss of text; paper faults on C5 and D4, affecting a few words; a few other leaves just trimmed at upper or outer margin, or repaired at tip of corner, generally not affecting text.) 19th-century blue morocco, spine titled in gilt, gilt edges, by W. Pratt (extremities very lightly rubbed). Provenance: Cardiff Castle bookplate.

FIRST EDITION, first or second issue; Wing records two title-pages, both dated 1685, which differ in their imprint. The first, like the present copy, is by "Joh. Harris", the second by "Jo. Harris": the order of the issues is unknown, nor is it completely certain whether the difference in imprint is the only difference between the two issues. Harrison also records another title-page, "a long t-p., descriptive of contents", but gives no further details. The present copy's imprint and frontispiece tally exactly with the Rylands copy collated by Harrison. He claims that this is "apparently a revised issue of 1st ed., which has a different t-p from one B.M., & the Bodl. copy"; however, the British Library has two copies (both imperfect) with both imprints. Wing B-5512 (5 copies); Harrison 34.
