Fourth Edition of Leaves of Grass, greatly revised and bound as issued with Drum-Taps, Sequel to Drum-Taps, and Songs before Parting (comprising BAL's Issue 1 -- no priority), PRESENTATION COPY TO SWINBURNE, inscribed by the author at head of title-page: "Algernon Charles Swinburne, from Walt Whitman." BAL 21399. Swinburne was a long-standing admirer of Leaves of Grass and a staunch supporter of Whitman in England, describing him as "one of the great geniuses of our time" (he was much later to repudiate this view) and including the celebratory ode "To Walt Whitman in America" in his Songs before Sunrise (1871).
