[HOOPER, John (d.1555) bishop of Gloucester]. Whether Christian faith maye be kepte secret in the heart, without confession therof openly to the worlde as occasion shal serve. From Roane, anno 1553, the iii of October.

Small 8° (127 x 84mm). Collation: A8. 19th-century red morocco gilt, edges gilt. Provenance: T.Jolley, F.S.A. bookplate; Cardiff Castle bookplate.

ONLY EDITION. This book used to be attributed to Calvin, but Hooper's authorship is now established. Hooper was a Puritan follower of John à Lasco and was burnt for heresy under Queen Mary in 1555. STC suggests as the publisher 'London? John Day?', but that seems unlikely, as the book appears to have been printed abroad. STC 5160.3
