Norton was the author of 'Gorboduc', the first tragedy written in English in blank verse. The present works deal with the Catholic rising in the north, following the flight of Mary Queen of Scotland into England. The rebellion was supported by the Earls of Northumberland and Westmorland and a gift of 12,000 crowns from the Pope.
