These library armchairs are nearly identical to a suite of giltwood seat furniture supplied to the 6th Earl of Coventry for Croome Court and sold by Sotheby's, 25 June 1948, lot 137 on behalf of the Croome Estate Trustees. Invoices dating to 1761 survive from the workshop of William Vile and John Cobb which are traditionally thought to refer to this same suite. An additional eight chairs and two settees also in giltwood were supplied to Croome Court by John Cobb in 1768. It was thought to be this suite (less two of the chairs) which was sold by Christie's London, 18 November 1982, lot 21.
A pair of library armchairs (in stained beechwood) belonging to Jack Dick, Dunellen Hall, Greenwich, Connecticut were sold by Sotheby Parke-Bernet, 16-19 September 1975, lot 370 and again in these Rooms, 22 October 1988, lot 103. Another pair of this model was sold in these Rooms, 24 January 1992, lot 266. All three pairs were most likely to have been originally gilded, and differ only slightly from the Croome Court suite in the treatment of the arm terminals.
