Richard Smith was described by Wood as 'the greatest pillar for the Roman Catholic cause in his time.' In 1537 he was one of the divines commissioned by Cranmer to compose The Institution of a Christian Man. On the accession of Edward VI he retracted his Roman Catholic opinions and lost his professorship, which was, however, restored by Queen Mary. (3)
