MAKER'S MARK OF FABERGE, WORKMASTER STEPHAN WAKEWA, SAINT PETERSBOURG, 1898-1908

Comprising a kettle on stand with heater, a teapot, coffee-pot, sugar bowl, waste-bowl, cream-jug, a pair of sugar tongs, strainer, 12 teaspoons and a two handled tray, each in the Louis XVI style with fluted lower half and engraved with a coat of arms, marked on bases, rims and inside covers-length of tray over handles 27in. Lot Essay

The arms are those of the Princes Wolkonsky who took on this surname after taking possesion of the site of the ancient town Volkonia. The descendants of this family gained fame for their family by serving the Russian Throne in distinguished positions and were decorated with Orders by the Tsars and granted other marks of honor and tokens of the Monarch's favor.
