A SILK-ON-LINEN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER
ROXANA M'GEE, FRANKLIN, TENNESSEE, AUGUST 1839

Worked in cream, light and dark green, yellow, black, brown and red silk threads in a variety of stitches including cross, chain, eyelet and satin in seven text registers comprising from top to bottom five alphabetic bands above the identifying register stitched with, "Roxana M'Gee's sampler Franklin, Tenn August, 1839." over the wrought verse, "May I govern my passions with absolute sway, And grow wiser and better as life wears away" all above a central urn with fruit flanked on either side by wreaths dated "1793" and "1799," the whole flanked on three sides by garlanded flowers--16¼in. high, 16¼in. wide
