Lot Essay

Built in 1872 for the White Star Line in Belfast by Harland & Wolff, this ship was intended for trans-Atlantic service from the British Isles to America. Sold in 1892 to a Copenhagen steamship company, the Celtic was renamed the "Amerika"; this name is not found on Lloyd's Register after 1899, suggesting this version of the Celtic may have been produced from Jacobsen's 1887 oil rendering of the ship.
