SPECULUM SPIRITUALIUM: DE VITA ACTIVA ET CONTEMPLATIVA. --Rolle de Hampole, Richard (1290?-1349). De emendatione vitae. Paris: Wolfgang Hopyl, for William Bretton in London, 1510.
4° (254 x 180mm). Collation: A10 a-z8 8 2A10. 228 leaves. 5 small woodcuts on title, large woodcut of the Crucifixion on A10v, 2 woodcuts on fo.208, large woodcut publisher's device on final verso, and decorated woodcut initials and lombard capitals. (Very small wormhole in final lvs. affecting an occasional letter.) 18th-century blindstamped calf (rubbed, backstrip chipped at head and foot), marbled endleaves. Provenance: occasional early marginal annotations; Cardiff Castle bookplate.
This compilation, the authorship of which remains uncertain, draws on the works of the great Christian mystical writers (SS. Bernard, Bonaventura, Bridget, Gregory, and Walter Hilton), discusses the active vs. contemplative life, and gives practical examples of how to lead a virtuous life. Appended to it is the first appearance in print of one of the most popular works by the English hermit and mystic, Richard Rolle de Hampole. While the colophon states that this edition was printed by Hopyl for Bretton in London, this copy, and only 2 others in STC, remained in Paris, as it has the imprint of Hopyl, and not Bretton. STC 23030.7; Adams S-1559
