COOKERY. A Booke of Receipts for severall Preserves, Conserves, Bakemeates, Dyet drinks, Chirurgery and severall other Medicines. MANUSCRIPT VOLUME OF APPROXIMATELY 350 COOKERY RECIPES AND 370 MEDICAL RECIPES AND CURES. Mid-17th century. Folio (307x199mm). 264 leaves, including 19 blanks. Written by three or four hands in brown and black ink. Early 17th-century black turkey gold-tooled, panel containing as centrepiece an arabesque lozenge and as cornerpieces a floral ornament containing an angel blowing, smooth spine with nine panels decorated with a stamp of grapes, later green morocco label, (spine faded; ties lacking), edges gilt, A HANDSOME BINDING, Provenance: Inscribed inside upper cover 'Catharin Gipps her Book. Given me by my dear Grandmother Poley ano Domee 1700.' Possibly referring to the Poley family of Boxted Hall in Suffolk.
The book is divided into five parts, each with a separate index, and was probably written over period of twenty years aroound the middle of the 17th century. The first 60 recipes are all for fruit, mainly preserves; followed by 47 recipes for marmelade, sweetmeats and dried fruit; the next group of 206, comprises meat dishes, puddings, etc.; a further group 0f 37 has mainly drinks and jellies;
