MARTIN, Sir Richard (1534-1617), master of the mint and lord mayor of London. A short treatise breiflie touching the differences & demands nowe in question depending betwixt the warden of the Mynt and the Master of the Mynt, and worker of the moneys therof, collected out of sundry indentures and antient precedents of the sayd Mynt. 28 February 1603. An interesting tract, addressed to James I, for reorganization of the mint and apparently asking that his privileges as master be upheld. 'The primarie & fundamentall cause is for the advancement of your majesties service there, that thinge partlie nowe oute of frame and swerving from the antient lawes and customes of the Mynt, may be drawn backe again to their old and pristine forme and rule and all offices and officers there may ... be brought to such a perfect simpathy and agreement ... as all thinge there may sort to the honor and service of your Majestie and the universall good of all tour loving subiects ..'. This tract has never been printed, but seems to have circulated in manuscript. There is a copy in the British Library.
