2° (380 x 288mm). Mounted on guards throughout. 60 lithographed plates, 57 FINELY HAND-COLOURED, by Keulemans or J.Smit, coloured by Mr. Smith, printed by M. & N.Hanhart, illustrations. (Some slight soiling to title and a few other leaves.) Contemporary red half calf gilt, t.e.g. (some discolouration of spine, extremities a trifle scuffed).

FIRST EDITION. 'A comprehensive treatment of the entire family of hornbills' (Zimmer). The work was originally issued in ten parts. It was Elliot's last major ornithological work; increasingly, he turned his attention to the study of mammals. Nissen IVB 297; Zimmer p.207; Fine Bird Books p.74.
