Oblong 2° (298 x 418mm). 33 ETCHINGS WITH BURNISHED AQUATINT, DRYPOINT AND ENGRAVING BY GOYA, on heavy wove paper. (Occasional light spotting, marginal in the main.) Near-contemporary red half morocco gilt, g.e. (lightly soiled and scuffed), with original upper and lower heavy grey paper wrappers bound-in, the upper cover with the letterpress title and GOYA'S ETCHED, AQUATINT, DRYPOINT AND BURIN SELF-PORTRAIT, the lower cover with letterpress plate list.
Second edition. The first edition was published by Goya in 1816 on laid paper. The third edition, consisting of 40 plates (including 7 plates not included in the first two editions), was printed by Loizelet in Paris in 1876. The self-portrait was originally issued as plate I in Los Caprichos. Harris 36, 204-236.
