A KOREAN LACQUERED LEATHER AND IRON-MOUNTED HELMET
CHOSON DYNASTY (19TH CENTURY)

Of conical form, divided vertically by four iron ribs decorated with running foliage in silver damascene and terminating in an iron cap decorated with silver damascene and fitted with a socket for holding a plume. The bottom of the helmet is encircled by a solid iron band with eight lappet heads on the upper edge; a separate browpiece is applied to the front of this band and it is boldly decorated with three stylized lotus blossoms and foliage in silver damascene. With three cotton-covered flaps with rows of brass rivets securing the lacquered horn plates inside. Height of helmet without flaps, 11 inches (28 cm)
