A PAIR OF FRENCH TERRACOTTA PORTRAIT RELIEFS OF LOUIS XIV AND LOUIS XV
19TH CENTURY

(losses and restorations)--21½in. (55cm.) and 21in. (53cm.) high, within giltwood beaded and acanthus carved frames

These reliefs derive from a medallic tradition, although their size and quality would suggest a decorative function. The monarchs are depicted in profile en face each appropriately dressed, ordered and styled. Louis XIV wears armor and the order of St. Esprit beneath a flowing jabot and a heavily curled perruque. His great-grandson, Louis XV, is crowned with his hair en queue wearing a ribbon and the order of the Golden Fleece. The various elements of the portraits are related to the full face marble busts by Puget and Lemoyne, but the depiction of the kings in relief and together is derived from the works of French medalists working the in first half of the 18th century such as Roettiers and Duvivier.
