AN ORMOLU-MOUNTED NEO-CLASSIC ITALIAN WHITE MARBLE, ALABASTER AND GREEN PORPHYRY MANTEL

With stepped rectangular top above a foliate-carved panelled frieze fitted with classical figures after the antique against an alabaster ground above Greek key and egg-and-dart banding, on panelled stiles and berried laurel stepped plinth, the aperture bordered with egg and dart -55¼in. (138cm.) high, 73¼in. (186cm.) wide, 9in. (23cm.) deep, the aperture 35in. x 52in. (89cm. x 132cm.)

Lot Essay

While the Chigi Palace Provenance cannot be confirmed, the chimneypiece relates to the refined decoration in the neoclassical style done between 1765 and 1767 for the Salone d'Oro in the Palazzo.
