A MARBLE PORTRAIT OF JULIUS CAESAR
AFTER THE ANTIQUE

The famous dictator of the Roman Republic is portrayed with the characteristic furrowed forehead, prominent nose and chin, wide eyes, wrinkled neck, and bald crown--15 1/2in. (39.4cm.) high

The bald head is a rather literal interpretation of Suetonius' description of Caesar. It differs greatly from ancient prototypes, such as the Pisa-Chiaramonti type from the Augustan period, which are somewhat idealized with a more generous, only slightly receding hairline than the present example.
