Lot Essay

These watercolors are illustrations for a folk story from the Valley of Oaxaca entitled The Coyote va a la Fiesta de Chihuitan. It tells the story of the coyote who decides to go to the fiesta where he buys food and drink for his children. He carries the food in a sack, but the rabbit decides to steal it. The rabbit tricks the coyote with an old shoe, which he places in his path. First, the coyote sees one shoe, then another. Going back to pick up the first one, he leaves his sack behind. The naughty rabbit spying on him, grabs the sack and sits under some branches, eating and drinking. The coyote returns, finding his sack has disappeared, and sadly returns home empty-handed.
