A PERUVIAN SILVER-MOUNTED GOURD SCENT BOTTLE AND AN ARGENTINIAN SILVER MEDAL

The gourd with scalloped mounts and screw-on chained cap, carved with stylized foliage and LA PATRIA, LA UNION Y LA VIVA -- 2in. (5cm.) high; the medal commemorating the liberation of Buenos Aires in 1807 (drilled with hole) -- 2in. (5cm.) diameter.

Lot Essay

During its final days under Spanish rule, Buenos Aires was attacked by the British under Admiral Sir Home Popham and General William Carr Beresford, who took the city in 1806 after the Spanish viceroy fled. An Argentine militia force led by Jacques de Liniers liberated the city and managed to beat off a renewed attack by General John Whitelicke the following year.
