Each of inverted pear shape, the mouth extending into side handles, painted in colours with children at various pursuits within green foliage edged with gilt on the blue ground gilt with circles of dots and with a gilt garland (one with restored neck and rim and one handle, the other with restored rim chip and slight wear to gilding)--7¼in. André Vincent Viellard a painter at Vincennes and Sèvres, active 1752-1790

Probably designed by Jean-Claude Duplessis père, the present pair is an example of the third of the six sizes in which the vase à oreilles was produced by Sèvres between 1754 and 1777. A pair of the first size (32cm.) also dated 1758 and with similar ground colours and gilding enclosing cartouches painted with military encampments is in the Wallace Collection (C252-253). Cf.
