(11 3/8 x 9 5/16 in.), contemporary half marbled calf, smooth spines gilt, morocco lettering-pieces, edges stained yellow, extremities rubbed; the plates loose in original printed pasteboard portfolio, backstrip chipped, some light foxing to text, mostly marginal foxing to plates, fraying to plate edges.
FIRST AND ONLY EDITION, folding table in vol. 2, 9 engraved plates loose in portfolio, of which 6 views by Johann Passini after Thomas Ender, and 2 hand-colored plates by J. Jung after Zehner, showing a geological section and Brazilian insects.

"Pohl took part, with Martius, Natterer, and Raddi, in the famous scientific expedition to Brazil sponsored by Francis I of Austria in 1817... The great importance of Pohl's work lies in the descriptions he gives of Goias, a part of Brazil almost unknown to foreign scientists. The beautiful atlas...is one of the best published at that time. It was Prince Metternich who selected the drawings to be published from Ender's numerous sketches"--Borba de Moraes. RARE.
