Doris Caesar was born in Brooklyn, and studied drawing and sculpture in the USA and Europe. She worked for five years in Archipenko's studio and was later influenced by German sculptors Ernst Barlach and Rudolf Belling. After World War II she concentrated almost exclusively on the female nude, in which she re-interpreted the forms and symbolism of ancient female fertility figures.
