Of moon-flask shape, the face of each slightly convex and painted with ten Chinese characters in black and two seals of the Emperor Qianlong in iron-red, the narrower sides molded with floral scrolling and gilded, the interior turquoise, some polish at neck and foot, some wear, stopper

This is a somewhat beguiling bottle, seemingly imitating the European watch-face, but in place of the usual Roman numerals are Chinese characters bearing no relation to time. European timepieces were a popular novelty in the early Qing court and the watch-face began to appear in the decorative designs of snuff bottles in the 18th century. Presumably, this bottle is in some way connected to them
