The madder, mustard and ivory octagonal Karachopt medallion flanked by madder triangles containing diamonds all flanked by ivory latched star-flower reserves, other rectangular reserves and various geometric motifs all within a cream shield palmette border, zigzag minor borders (restorations)--approximately 7ft. 2in. x 5ft. 11in. (218cm. x 180cm.)

Lot Essay

The rug offered here has several design characteristics which indicated that it is older than the more common Karakchopt Kazaks woven in the second half of the 19th century. The most prominent of these elements is the crab palmette border motif which is usually associated with Caucasian weavings of the 18th and early 19th centuries.
