A RARE LETTER OF GIST, TWO WEEK'S AFTER HE SERVED IN THE BOMBARDMENT OF FORT SUMTER

A full autograph letter of Gist regarding the arming of Tennessee volunteers. "The Tennessee Volunteers have been rec'd & commissioned under Resolution of the State Convention foe Sea Coast Defenses, etc. They are under command of Capt. W.W. Elliot and are entitled to arms, if there are any for distribution." Docketed on verso: "Order to furnish 75 muskets to the Tennessee Volunteers Beaufort District..."

The uniquely named Gist (1831-1864), attended Harvard Law School and was named adjutant and inspector general of South Carolina troops soon after secession. He participated in the siege and shelling of Sumter and after serving as as aide-de-camp to General Bee at 1st Bull Run, he succeeded to Bee's command as Brigadier General, later served at Vicksburg under Pemberton, and at Chickamauga and Missionary Ridge. Leading his brigade into battle on foot after his horse was shot, he was killed in November 1864 at Franklin, Georgia. His letters are rare.
