ROOT, GEORGE FREDERICK. Autograph musical quotation signed ("Geo. F Root"), comprising the three-bar refrain of his song "The Battle Cry of Freedom," dated "Chicago, Feb[ruary] 1892." 1 page, 8vo. The famous tune is carefully notated on a treble staff with the marking "Maestoso," and beneath, Root has written the lyrics, "Yes, we'll rally 'round the flag boys. We'll rally once again." Root (1820-1895), a New York composer and music educator, wrote three of the great popular songs of the American Civil War: "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp, the Boys are Marching," "Just Before the Battle, Mother," and "The Battle Cry of Freedom," which he composed just after Lincoln issued his first call for troops. The song was very widely sung by Union soldiers in battle. Root's manuscripts are rare.
