In this particularly intriguing letter, General Gates writes to General Ward that he has been ordered to detach 1000 men from his army to accompany Colonel Benedict Arnold "upon an Expedition, intended to cooperate with General Schuyler..." The expedition referred to is Arnold's famous march to Quebec, which commenced approximately one week after Gates penned this letter. "Colonel Arnold of Connecticut waits upon you with This Letter. He is appointed by the General to Command a Detachment of 1000 Men & Officers, to be Detached from this Army, upon an Expedition, intended to cooperate with that of General Schuyler; Col[.] Arnold will acquaint you with all particulars; & be glad of yours, & your Brigadiers advice, and assistance, in promoting this important service..."
