Engraved wrapper, elaborate engraved titlepage by Franz Kratzschmer, engraved full score, plate number 1901, INSCRIBED BY THE COMPOSER TO JENNY LIND: "Der hochverehrten Frau Jenny Goldschmidt zu freundlicher Erinnerung Robert Schumann," at lower corner of the front wrapper.
The work was composed in 1851 for soloists and chorus with piano acompaniment; the orchestral arrangement was made slightly later, and first performed in February 1852. Jenny Lind (1829-1887), one of the greatest coloratura sopranos of the nineteenth century had married Otto Goldschmidt in 1982 after her return from her celebrated American tour, promoted by P.T. Barnum.
