"In extending my greetings... on the occasion of your annual meeting, I am moved to voice my admiration for the constructive approach taken by the JWB to carry out an intensive...survey of its function in, and service to, the community... May I express here my feeling that the organization whose magnificent devotion to the men and women in uniform won it the gratitude of the United States government has richly earned its mandate from the Jewish community of this country to extend its splendid and wholesome career of service... Exactly ten years ago President Roosevelt in his message...pointed out that your organization, through its numerous affiliated community centers, 'had created the potent influence of good citizenship, of wholesome character and loyalty to all those forces upon which depend the preservation and development of our democratic institutions.' Today, more than ever before, we need -- as Americans and as inhabitants of a hard-hit world -- to strive for general betterment, to give of our energies in causes dedicated to the promotion of human welfare..."
