Lot Essay

The crest is that of Sargent, as borne by Epes Sargent (1690-1762) of Boston, and his sones Epes Jr. (1721-1779) and Paul Dudley (1745-1827). Paul Revere engraved the full arms of Sargent on a copper bookplate of 1764 for Epes Sargent Jr. and on a silver coffeepot of 1781 for Paul Dudley Sargent, both in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Kathryn C. Buhler, American Silver in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, 1972, figs. 350 and 367)
