These three views were made after drawings by Thomas Pownall, who served as colonial governor of Massachusetts from 1757 to 1759, and Captain Hervey Smyth. The first Scenographia Americana comprised a total of twenty-eight views of America engraved after drawings done on the spot by several officers of the British army and navy. Other collections of similar views issued contemporaneously by the same publishers are also referred to as Scenographia Americana.
